First purchase of canoe paddles. Purchased aluminum ones for a new canoe. The paddles were inexpensive, around $25 each. They are well made, lite weight, comfortable to hold and are strong. Would recommend these paddles.

Carlisle Wooden Ottertail Laminated. Probably the best looking paddle in this price range. The only one I've seen in the typical sporting shops with the classic palm grip. The shaft 'popped' on me on its fifth time out, in the middle of a standard forward stroke. I accept partial blame, was paddling hard and fast. Would recommend these for slow relaxed paddling.

Carlisle's bent shaft spoon-bladed paddle is one terrific beater, especially for the price (<$30). It's not pretty, that's for sure, but if nothing else I'd buy it for a spare or a loaner. Since the paddle is directional (unlike the straight-shaft, flat-blade model), how about an ergonomic grip, instead of that generic pear shape?

Toughest paddle I have ever used, but extremely heavy and lousy aesthetics. Does not slice through water due to shaft through center of blade. Okay for whitewater and great for rentals.
