West Twin River (Cooperstown to Melnik Rd Bridge - Ended Trip Early)
Trip Overview
Launched from the bridge on Zander Road, East of Cooperstown. I had originally planned on going all the way to Shoto lake, but had to stop at the Melnik Rd Bridge due to significant blockage in the river.
For anyone wanting to look at gorgeous views, this is an excellent route to take. However you will want to do so when the river is significantly higher than it was at the time of my trip. The majority of the river, at least the part I was on, was wide but incredibly shallow. I ended up having to walk a majority of the route and float the kayak behind me. Definitely want to try again when the water is higher as the water will be nice and fast with small rapids. Thankfully the views made the trip with it, despite the dissapoitment of not being able to kayak much
Note: At the Nachtwey Rd Bridge you will either have to portage out or get out and lift your kayak down, there is a small "falls" with about a 2 foot drop. When the river is much higher experienced kayakers may be able to handle the rapids.
Safety Notes
Lots of large rocks. Since there are a few points where you may have to get out water shoes are recommended.
