Watch the wind and tide!

Trip Overview

This is a nice launch spot. Reletively shielded from the current and wind. I headed toward the beach against a stiff wind and incoming tide in a 17 ft. Necky Narpa. 1/2 mile in it wasn't fun anymore and headed back. I wasn't ready to quit, so headed upstream with the wind and tide until I was at the enterance to Grand Cove, about 3/4 mile from the launch point. The trip back was a good workout, especially where the river narrows down making a venuturi effect with the tide.

The channel for the power boats is well marked and boats were traveling slowly to keep wakes down.

There is a sandbar right across from the launch area that is visible at low tide but might surprise a paddler a few hours after low tide as the water goes from deep to ankle deep quite quickly.

Another place to launch nearby is the public boat launch in Horsefoot cove. I didn't go to that area, but it is probably less impacted by currents and tides than the kayak launch area.

Two kayak and paddleboard rentals are in the area. One at the this launch point, the other at the boat launch nearby.
