Trip Overview

The Wallkill River is a beautiful quiet river located in Northwest New Jersey. The trip I took started at the Federal Wildlife Management area near Bassets Bridge, between Sussex and Vernon. As the land is all protected you are sure to see much wildlife, including many different species of birds. It is a very pleasant trip of two hours or more of delightful paddling. The current is not strong so there is no problem to double back to where you started.

Accommodations:

There is a parking lot by Bassetts Bridge. Unfortunately, you must carry or drag the kayak or canoe about a tenth of a mile over grass to the put in.

Directions:

A detailed map of Sussex County would be helpful. The parking lot is located by the intersection of Owens Road and Bassetts Bridge Road. It is about 25 minutes from Vernon and fifteen minutes from Sussex.
