The Slab on the Barren

Trip Overview

Great easy put in and take out! Nice party barn w/games and snacks. Paid parking. Camping, playground, cabins, water slide and swing. Shuttle and rentals available. Tubing.

Nice, clear water with some good current for about 2 1/2 miles then river becomes wider and less current is noticeable making for more strenuous paddling.
There are several sand nice bars for rest and picnicking. The tubing trek is 2 miles and marked with a stop sign on the right at take out. Otherwise there aren’t many markers. There was a tractor along the left pumping water inland at about the 4 mile mark.
A rain cloud surprised us and we paddled the last 2 miles in a straight downpour!

Not sure if it was due to the rain, but the scenery was just heavy woods- not much to see and we only saw a few herons as far as wildlife

After loading up at the take out, we discovered a tree down across the road preventing our trip home. Be advised: there is no cell phone service in the immediate area. This caused a couple miles of walking until we were able to call for assistance.

The lady from the campground was able to contact the county road department, who were fairly prompt, quite friendly and very efficient in removing the very large red oak from the road and we were on our way.

Safety Notes

NO CELL PHONE SERVICE THROUGHOUT TRIP
