Quilcene Bay and Dabob Bay on Hood Canal, Washington

A self-supported trip created by Pertribe135

Trip Overview

Launched at Quilcene Boat Haven, paddled down and out of Quilcene Bay past Point Whitney to Dabob Bay and around Pulali Point to Jackson Cove and back. There’s a tremendous upwelling at Pulali Point. Apparently, there are huge walls of rock, underwater cliffs that are popular with divers for the abundant marine life. Saw eagles, otters (two moms with two pups each) and seals. Saw a couple healthy starfish too which was encouraging after the recent incidents of sea-star wasting disease that wiped out the once prolific populations in the Northwest.

Safety Notes

The Navy uses Dabob Bay for some military operations connected to the nearby submarine base at Bangor, WA. There’s a small barge with a flashing red light out in the bay to warn boaters if they’re active. We got stopped once paddling across Dabob Bay on a different trip and asked to stay near the shore where we launched.
