North Beach - Port Townsend Washington

Trip Overview

Launched at North Beach in Port Townsend into the Strait of Juan de Fuca hoping to reach Protection Island but got hung up in a current eddy. Even though the tide was outgoing, we couldn't make any real progress west. We didn’t get far enough offshore to hit the current running out but got hung up in an eddy running the reverse of the tide. The currents nearshore are tricky here. It’s so odd to paddle steadily for 15 minutes or so and realize you’re making no progress. Difficult to tell when you’re on open water and not paying close attention to landmarks on the shoreline in the distance. Stopped and had a nice lunch at Glass Beach. There was an old dump site at Middlepoint (still a couple old car axles in the shallows). It’s been closed for years but the bonanza of beach glass - mostly picked over now - remained.
