Trip Overview

Down the middle section of the Blackwater River from Peter's Bridge in Salisbury to Burbank's Mill in Webster to NH. The route is entirely within the flood control area behind the Blackwater Dam (US Army Corps of Engineers). This is a flatwater trip though there is a constant current that can be paddled against if required. The area visible from the banks is in a substantial natural state except for one road crossing and the occasional historical remnants of settlement. Approximately 13.75 miles. Because the riparian zone is relatively remote there is no effort to remove wood from the stream to facilitate paddling and this led to 13 portages around blow downs. Of the 13 two were simple enough to lift over but the remaining 11 required hauling boats around through brush and other obstacles. There were also several "schooch" overs. At different water levels you might encounter fewer or more obstacles. It took us 6+ hours to make the descent (two people). A challenging effort but the feeling of solitude and remoteness is unparalleled this far south in New England.

Safety Notes

There is one road crossing (South Road) at approximately 5.5 miles that allows access as well as one short portion adjacent to Little Hill Road (10 miles?) otherwise a walk out could be difficult. Snowmobile trails do parallel the stream in areas. There is good cell phone access for much of the trip.

Gear Notes

Have good shoes to navigate the blow downs. Open toed sandals are not recommended in the brush. Your clothing should be treated with permethrin due to ticks.

Conditions

There is no gauge on this watershed. The next watershed to the west (Warner River) is gauged and showed approximately 275 CFS discharge at the time we made the descent.

Portage Notes

Every blow down was different. On a number we had to paddle back upstream to find a suitable site to take out. Guessing which bank to take out on is usually not a problem and we never had to get back into our boats and cross the river to try the other side. Some stretches (first 3 miles) are quite open but there were 3 blow downs in the last mile.
