Trip Overview

I spent this weekend with my family paddling at Shellmound for the first time. We went to separate days and had a beautiful experience each time we put in at the boat ramp at the campground and got in quickly and didn’t have any issues with any boats. There were four of us each time that we went we never left side of the boat ramp. The location is a very large area. We paddled for four hours. We seen a lot of wildlife birds manatees touching the kayak. one of my family members fished and caught catfish. It was a great experience and so beautiful.

Safety Notes

I would wear water shoes or water boots so mound is nothing but oyster bars so if you plan to get in and out of the boat or even at the boat ramp, it can be slippery and sharp.

Gear Notes

There are known to be game wardens at this location pretty often so I’m sure you are obeying the laws of having a life jacket with you.

Conditions

I suggest going at low tide when the tide is high or coming in it comes in really fast and hard, so some kayaks will struggle against the current to get back to the boat ramp.

Portage Notes

There is a place to put in at the campground and at the boardwalk we have put in at both places at this time and prefer to put in at the boat ramp next to the boardwalk. The boat ramp is much wider and all gravel ground so you don’t feel like you’re taking up space where boats are putting in.
