Trip Overview

A beautiful section of the Holston River near Knoxville, TN. The trip begins at McBee Landing Park in Strawberry Plains, passing under the 785-foot McBee bridge (aka rainbow bridge) shortly thereafter. Horses, cows, geese, and dogs were seen enjoying the water along the way. We also spotted 2 juvenile bald eagles about halfway into our paddle. Roseberry creek is a great place to stop for lunch with a gravel bar nearby for larger groups.

There is a rock shelter or cave on the left before takeout. We did not have time to check it out but there is a rope and ladder inside of it.

Conditions

The Cherokee Dam was not generating. Some areas were quite shallow but deep enough for a flat bottom kayak. Exposed shoals created some ripples and required maneuvering.
