Trip Overview

Lake Mauzy is a small (approx 100 acre) lake/impoundment located in Western Kentucky. It is part of the Higginson Henry Wildlife Management Area and is maintained by the KY Department of Wildlife Management. The lake is surrounded by wooded area interspersed with gravel roads and horse trails. The shoreline of the lake consists primarily of mud flats with numerous downed trees and stump beds. There is a large area of rip rap located over the levee that makes up one side of the lake. The fishing at Lake Mauzy is superb with numerous bass, crappie and channel catfish. The best fishing is found near any of the numerous trees that are submerged in the water and also about 15-20 out from the levee. The paddling is easy (flatwater) and because motorized boats are limited to 10hp or less you do not have to worry about being run over!

Accommodations:

Lakeside camping is free, primitive, and no permits are required. There are no designated campsites but you can basically just pull off the gravel road that follows most of the lakeshore and camp in one of several clearings. I stress that camping is Primitive- meaning no potable water or electricity. There is a rather disgusting porta-pottie located off the main gravel road but I would not recommend it! If you are looking for good eats after a hard day of paddling I recommend the Feedmill restaurant on HWY 60 east about 2 miles outside of Morganfield. The Cajun food is outstanding!

Directions:

Take U.S. HWY 60 west to Morganfield. In Morganfield take a left at the second stoplight onto HWY 56 East. You will travel approx. 10 miles on HWY 56 and then see a sign for Lake Mauzy on the right. Take a right turn at the next road (approx 50 ft. from the sign).

Resources:

Any Map of KY will show The Higginson Henry WMA, however Lake Mauzy is typically unmarked. Maps of Lake Mauzy and other WMA are available through KY Dep. Of Wildlife Management.
