Lake Hudson St. Park and Rec. Area in Michigan

Trip Overview

This no-wake, man-made lake has an extensive convoluted shoreline and abundant wildlife. Bird watchers will love the quiet atmosphere in which to observe great blue herons, kingfishers, geese, egrets, and many species of smaller birds.

If you paddle quietly, chances are good that you will see one or two huge ancient snapping turtles basking in the shallows. Some areas are replete with large carp among the lilypads. They will thrash wildly as you paddle by, so be prepared for surprises!

This is a quiet lake - you will not be bothered by jet-skis (lake lice), speedboats, or rowdy party-pontoons. It is a good lake for fishing, and there are usually 4 or 5 small fishing boats puttering about. It takes a day to paddle the entire shoreline if you like to take it slow and enjoy nature. The southwest section is especially remote and wild.

Accommodations:

Small primitive camping area available (pump water, outhouses - no showers). Beach/picnic area with outhouse. Very nice launch-site/staging area with outhouse.

Fees:

$4.00 per day or pay $24 for a sticker that will get you into any Michigan State Park for the year.

Directions:

From Hudson, MI take M-34 east towards Adrian. At Clayton Corner, turn right (south) on 156. Within a mile or two you will come upon the Lake Hudson Recreation Area. Turn right to enter.
