Trip Overview

The Kiamichi River has head waters near Mena, Arkansas and feeds into the Red River near Hugo, Oklahoma. The river runs through the beautiful Kiamichi Mountain Range. While generally a flat, slow moving river it can rain and create some Class I-II whitewater and even gets dangerous at springtime high water levels. Lots of good scenic canoeing for up to 100 miles if you have the time. No commercialization along this river. Rarely any human life along the way, just lots of nature.

Accommodations:

The only outfitter and campground on the river is K River Campground (www.kriver.com). Camping is common on the gravel bars along the trip. There are state parks and RV parks at numerous lakes in the area. This part of Oklahoma is fairly undeveloped for tourism which offers mystique and beauty to be discovered.

Fees:

No fees or permits required.

Directions:

Antlers, Ok is the first exit going north on the Indian Nation Turnpike. Can also get there on U.S. Hwy 271 going north from Paris, TX. Follow the river by going north on Hwy 2 and hwy 271.

Launches:

Good put-ins at Hwy 271 bridge at Antlers, K River Campground which is 8 mi north of Antlers on Hwy 2, and at Clayton, OK, Hwy 271 bridge.
