Hammonasset River in Connecticut
Trip Overview
A great place to paddle and enjoy nature. Watch the tides and it will make the day easier. I put in on River Road which runs along the west side of the river. Put in is right below the I-95 overpass. Again watch the tides the river gets a little shallow here at low tide.
I put in just before the 3 hours after low tide and came back on a high incoming tide which makes paddling easier. The river takes you through some great sights of Ospreys and their nest. Some nice Stripped Bass that were chasing bait fish up the river. Red Winged Black birds, Hermit Crabs, eels, and a large snapping turtle that was enjoying itself catching bait fish for a dinner.
I paddled down as far as the mouth of the river to Long Island Sound. Beware and stay away from the main channel. There are some boaters that think they have the right to make wakes in a "NO WAKE ZONE" Take some time to paddle the small tributaries and do some exploring. This is where you will find nature at it best.
The paddle back was easy with the incoming tide. There are a few spots along this river that you can exit your kayak and walk along the marsh and take a rest and explore also. I noticed a few other kayakers going down river as I was paddling back and hope they also had watched the tides or they will be in for a surprise if they are the ones that parked up river from me.
Well enjoy this river and all it has to offer. Don't be in a hurry and enjoy it all. Enjoy and Paddle Safe!
