Grove Hill Boat Ramp to Alma Bridge

Trip Overview

Plenty of space both places to park vehicles. Kayak trip was taken when gauge height was between 3 & 3.5, and we would NOT recommend to go when it is any lower, as there are QUITE a few low areas over rapids especially after the dam. I would not advise a beginner kayaker to do this trip, as you have to be good at reading the river and knowing how to doge the rocks while going over extended rapids. Just before the dam there is a sign on the right says "Portage Here" and you can haul your kayak/canoe over the short path past the dam and put in afterwards. It gets quite deep about 2 miles before the dam, and power boats/jet skis were flying up and down that part. We put in about 1:00 p.m. and took plenty of time to fish/ pull aside to swim /etc, and got off the river at 7:30.

Conditions

Would not want to kayak this with gauge height any lower than 3.0 - 3.5! Check Water Data . usgs . gov for this info.

Portage Notes

Portage is on the righthand side of the dam, PAST a private dock. There is a big sign - can't miss it. Short path to haul kayaks around the dam.
