Trip Overview

5 of us,, in that verge between high water and low water 10,000 to 7,000 cfs. Hot weather,, some record breaking heat,, and that is saying something in the Utah desert. Great paddle 120 miles,, three Class Is or low Class IIs No spray decks, not required. Spectacular scenery. Desert hikes, cliffs, a few trees,, shade offered by some rock overhangs. Some steep banks to climb to campsites. Actually easier a week or two later,, sand bars and islands appear,, easy wonderful camping. Don't go fast,,, go slow. 10 miles and camp,, wonderful.. 15 or so miles and find a good spot for stopping and/or lay over day. Go slow,, not fast.. Call Tex's in Moab for pick up at the Confluence. DO NOT turn right Brown Betty and the beginning of Cataract Canyon,, unless experienced and properly geared Class III to Class V

As with ALL western . canyon rivers,,DO NOT stop to eat breakfast. at first hint of light, pack it up, roll it up, load it up ,, Paddle in the morning. Too danged hot in the afternoon, too danged windy in the afternoon,, get to your next campsite (15 to 20 miles) before noon. I emphasize,, BEFORE noon. "Cause it doth begin to blow in the after noon times,, nearly every day,, and always upstream. How do it know to blow upstream every time? How do it know? Ya don't want to be out there. Ya wanna have drink and lunch in hand, comfortable, watching the few others struggle against the wind.
