Trip Overview
I made the trip down the Comite launching at Blackwater Conservation Area and took out of the river at Wadill Wildlife Refuge. totaling close to 7.25 miles. It is a good hike from the parking area to the launch, but the trails are nice.
The river gauge at "Comite River Near Comite Joor Rd." read somewhere between 0 and 0.1 feet. There was plenty of water to keep me from scraping bottom. The first third of the trip was wonderful, shallow waters shaded by willows and lined with sandbars. Once you get past that first third the water gets deeper and more trees are blocking the river. I encountered 2 areas that were completely blocked by down trees, but was able to get out and walk around.
There is plenty of wildlife along the river. On my trip there was an impressive number of dragonflies and only one alligator (who quickly swam away as soon as I was in sight)
The "rapids" are a special treat for our area and were quite enjoyable.
The take out point at Wadill is a smaller sandbar with a steep bank and another long hike to parking. Wadill is only open Tuesday - Saturday.
Safety Notes
I would not recommend this trip for beginners. The flowing water and down trees pose a safety hazard
