Chemung River in New York

Trip Overview

We intended this to be a 17 mile day trip, but due to a broken paddle, which took a couple of hours to replace, we made it an overnight.

The river is low in a few places near Corning which required us to get out and push over the rocks. This is where I snapped my paddle. We camped on an island about half way along (near the old Hickling power plant). That seemed to be the end of shallow water and pushing.

There is wildlife along the river- deer, otters, and a variety of birds- herons, ducks, osprey, mergansers as well as song birds.

This would be an easy 1st trip for beginners. Just make sure you can swim, and wear PFD's.
