Trip Overview

My girlfriend and I just took a day trip down the Black River in Ramara, ON. We are beginner kayakers, and found the trip very manageable on our two small kayaks. Mostly calm waters with a few little rapids for a quick dose of fun. Launching was quite easy from a road just south of Coopers Falls that runs along side the river. The Black River Wilderness park was a beautiful campground to leave our exit vehicle, and pull-out the kayaks. The whole trip took us roughly 3 hours at a moderate paddling pace. Not including one portage, lunch, and a couple brief rests.

Gear Notes

We didn't take too much with us. A backpack with extra water/Powerade, a couple sandwiches, sunscreen, bug spray. I brought one of the ropes we used to tie down the kayaks on the way over, just in case. We made sure our phones were fully charged before the trip, and used them mainly for pictures as we were in and out of cell service. I used www.mapcarta.com to see where we were when i did have service. Very useful site with road, terrain, and satellite images.

Portage Notes

The river water level was high according to locals when we got to a large set of rapids about 45 minutes into our trip. They said that some people go down them when the water level is lower, however there is a rocky ledge on the right hand side that goes under the bridge. The walk is a bit technical while carrying a boat, but we managed it in about 15 minutes. After a large rock there is a nice sandy bank beyond the rapids where we put the kayaks back in the river.
