William and Eleanor Crook Park

San Marcos River

Description

Great lunch point

We did a 3 hour trip from here to Old Bastrop bridge. From the Williams park's parking lot, it's about 400ft walk to the water. Both sides of the bridge will work to launch, we chose the right side. The water looks super clear like glass. You'll see a lot of turtles. Once launched, after the 35 bridge you'll get to the waterfall. Red round floating balls will prevent you from going over the falls. Hang a left and portage on the concrete to the section after the waterfall, 30ft walk. After the waterfall, the river picks up speed through the 180 turns, this was the fastest part. The Cape St bridge was safe enough for us to go under, about 4ft. From there it gets slower and relaxing, take your time and enjoy seeing the catfish below. The water eventually turns green, we did a lot of paddling to speed up the trip. The San Marcos river merges with the Blanco river. We took a right and hit a lot of wind that day, it felt like we were paddling up stream. We then came up to a dam. Hang a hard right, you can feel the water pulls you towards the water fall. So rest before you get near it, so you can give it everything, if needed. You'll then see two wooded staircases down. Portage down the steps and back onto the water. Both have a few steps that are missing and some steps need some repairs. After that the river runs at a moderate rate. The river was a little too low around the Texas state tube park. I'd recommend recovery at the old Bastrop Rd or Pecan park riverside RV park for $2 a kayak.
