Safes Lagoon Canoe Trail

Gunbower Creek

Description

A canoe trail around Safes Lagoon. Often you can go right round the loop without doubling back but it does depend on the height of the creek. Visibility in the water of the lagoon is much clearer and opportunities to see fish (carp and others) turtles and other creatures if patient and quiet abound. Lots of birds including azure kingfishers, whistling kites, yellow rosellas. A kayak launch makes getting in to the creek easy, getting out can still be a bit of a challenge. Road into the canoe launch can be a little dicey if wet - watch out for large holes. When dry it is still passable in a 2wd vehicle. Free camping and many spots available along the creek. No bathroom facilities available. A one way paddle from Safes Lagoon to the Koondrook Track Boat Ramp takes between 1hr 10 to 1hr 45 depending on pace. It’s a 5.6 paddle.
