Johnsonville State Park

Trace Creek/Tennessee River

Description

This is a great alternative to Pebble Isle Marina launch. You can drop your kayaks virtually anywhere on the gentle, lake-like banks of the Johnsonville State Park without a fee. Par your truck 50 feet away. If you stop at the state Park visitors Center on highway 70 before you head up to the park, you can learn the history of the area so that when you go out kayaking you can know what happened there during the civil war and also in the 1940s when the TVA flooded the area with a dam. You'll be kayaking over the foundations of community homes and factories. You'll be kayaking through a civil war river battle. There is a gentle current traveling north, so our paddle back to the launch point was slightly strenuous. 3.2 mile paddle. We did it in about 2 hours in our sixties. That means anyone can do it. Porta Potties. Take a picnic. The nearest food is 30 minutes.
