I love this kayak. I have tried both sit-on and sit-in kayaks and this one is my favorite. From the oversize cockpit opening to its stability this kayak is great. I love to out my grandkids on a boat cushion between my legs when we go out so they can go along and not have to try to keep up. I would love to get another but am having a hard time finding a 10.4 size. If you are thinking of getting a kayak this is a great value.

Better than expected after reading some of these reviews. Bought a pair of these 10.4 Viper's at a garage sale and hit the local river. I found the plastic to be heavier gauge and more durable than what some have described here. The river is somewhat shallow at points and we did hit a few rocks which didn't really hurt the Viper's other than a few light scratches. Not sure on tracking but we were able to paddle and stay straight with no issues.

we own two, primary use is recreational paddling in rivers and lakes. They're great entry level kayaks, and we've enjoyed them every time we paddle! In very shallow water it performs well. Not too heavy; super durable! Love the two cup holders and dry well. Easy to get in/out of and super hard to tip. We've never had an issue in the 4 years we've had them. Tracking isn't great because it's a flat bottom kayak; slower compared to more expensive options..

I love that this inexpensive kayak is so stable. I can take friends who have never kayaked and they are able to do some easy rivers with us right away. People claim that they are slow and don't track well. We do mostly rivers so it doesn't matter. They are really comfortable and have many nice features: 2 drink holders, a back hatch for items, a drain plug so we can wash them properly and adjustable feet pegs

Love this kayak. Only downfall for me is no paddle holder. Inexpensive fix. Good beginner yak. More stable than the more expensive one I bought this year. Also slides well under most logs as I like river trips and won't portage my boat if I can slide under anything, lol.

Submitted by: AllyG47 on 8/2/2019

I purchased the Viper 10.4 during a Black Friday sale at Menards. It was priced at around $150. I had no experience using a kayak, however, this one seems to be a good entry-level model. I used it two or three times in the past three years. Pros: It is comfortable to sit in. It is easy to steer in the water. There is plenty of storage including a cup holder for a bottle of water. It is lightweight and easy to carry.

Cons: The plastic is cheap and warps easily. It is awkwardly shaped which makes it difficult to put on top of a car or in the back of a truck. It can get hot inside while you are paddling. I only used it in the early morning and I was sweating from the waist down.

Overall, I think this kayak is a very good value and a great beginner kayak. I would purchase it again if I was looking for another kayak.

Good entry level kayak. The biggest plus is the value. While it is simple, cheap molded plastic construction, the plus side is that it is light. We bought 2 at $150 each, and have used them on 3 overnight river trips so far. They are stable and predictable.

Yes, you could ask for more, but you can't argue when this is a fraction of the price! I made a few simple cheap upgrades. Biggest thing was replacing the hardware for pull handles with reinforced backing (less than 1 dollar for hardware store parts).

In short, great value and you wont feel too bad if it gets dinged up.

Terrific performance at an entry-level price point! HOWEVER...one issue continued to haunt me as I considered purchasing Viper 10.4 Kayaks for my family---lack of flotation! I want to share a very easy, effective and inexpensive solution that I discovered to address that void. I have 8 photos that make the solution very clear and would like to share!

Really struggling with this…

Submitted by: guest-paddler on 9/11/2018

Really struggling with this one... I've had kayak experience and it went on sale at Menards for $150. What the hell...why not? It is the 10.4 Viper model.

First of all, actual measurements from tip to tip are 10 feet, 1 inch. Not sure where 10'4" comes from. Maybe if you stretch the rope handles??? LOL

It is rated for 300 lbs, a nice plus. I'm 5'10" and 270 lbs (yeah, I'm fat). But it handled me well and I didn't feel like I was sitting too low in the water. Nice!

The plastic is cheap, but it's easier to load on and off the truck. Negative and a Plus.

No thigh pads. A $1 pool noodle and some clear gorilla tape fixed that.

No stern bulkhead. Huge minus... expect to buy Kayak Float Bags if you're halfway serious in case you capsize in deep water. The stern storage is it's own molded plastic compartment though, so the stern water intake is from the sides of the seat that flows backwards, and the "bubble" of the storage area should not fill up with water if the lid holds tight. I never tested how watertight the lid is.

The seat just SUCKS. And the little bit of foam there is starts to deteriorate quickly. A $6 stadium cushion from Dick's Sporting Goods helped.

I bought a 3rd party paddle, so no comments to offer on the default paddle.

Stability.... very good. No feeling of tipping over like cheap, short, "sit on top" kayaks. Honestly it was equivalent with stability to a high end 12 foot kayak I've been using.

The Bad.... is the tracking. It does NOT track straight in any sense of the word. Trying to coast or paddle in a straight line is equivalent to a rubber ducky in the bathtub. For many though... who cares? If you are with a group and trying to keep up, it could be a factor. Expect to zig zag your way through the way. All. The. Time.

For $150 to $200, it is a great kayak at a low price with better quality than other "entry level" kayaks at even higher prices. It's 10 feet, 1 inch as opposed to smaller kayaks with lower weight ratings, it is "sit inside" and stable, and if you start drilling holes and having some fun with mods, it is the PERFECT guinea pig. The plastic is cheap, but if you are on a lake and not hitting rocks, you will be fine. Don't leave it stored in the sun.

Bottom Line: Great for a few hours on a lake. Not for expeditions or the ocean or rivers. And enjoy!

Submitted by: sublime5981 on 9/10/2018

You can't beat these for a beginner or occasional use kayak. I paid $150 for mine (paddle included) at Menard's Black Friday sales. Initially bought two and now I own four. They are very stable and turn easily. Lots of space but, no waterproof storage area or added floatation. Personally, I prefer the space so, I can pack gear for overnight camping or take a small cooler on day trips. They aren't the fastest yaks so, you may fall behind in a group. Seats are the standard thin cushioning. I bought cheap, foam seat pads for added comfort. The only issue I've had is one of the pad eyes for the storage hatch bungee broke.

I am brand new to the Kayak world and was looking for something to get me started. I found the Viper on sale at Menards and picked one up. Since then I have taken many trips and added a couple features, hooks and paddle holders to keep the stuff I need close. I love this Kayak as a starter. I do plan to get a longer Kayak for the big trips and someday look to getting a short one for some rougher white water type trails. I definitely recommend this to a beginner or someone who is unsure if they will like it or not. We have a ton of fun and have taken them through Cascades in Ann Arbor, Across Detroit River to Belle Isle, On smaller lakes and plan to do Clinton River soon. Overall good Kayak, very stable. Only down side is no one makes a skirt for it so catching any waves means you will take on water.

Yes, I was nervous, carrying a 100# on kayak. Zero problems. Eau Claire river into WI river during a 2 day rain storm. Quit after 2 days. Very good value for the money.

Submitted by: RichP68 on 6/6/2018

I've never owned or even operated a kayak before, so I didn't know what features I needed or wanted. I knew I didn't want to spend a lot for a kayak then never use it because it was uncomfortable, unstable, or unwielding. After looking online and in-person for low-price kayaks at Dick's and Wal-Mart, I saw the Viper at Menard's, of all places. It was only $180 (down from $200) and seemed to have and be all that I needed. I was able to squeeze it into the Kia Soul (roof rack is next) and get it home without any problems. I've paddle it once around the 5-acre lake next to my house and had a blast. I never felt like I was going to tip, and I was able to get it going at a pretty good clip without too much effort (though I felt the effort later). The next step is to build a roof rack so I can get it into the nearby Des Plaines River and do some streaming.

I live in Minnesota. We bought our Viper 10.4 kayaks at Menard's. We originally bought them because of the price. But we found out early on the great kayak they are. The flat bottom is great for stability, the front tray and drink holders are awesome, the drain plug is great for rinsing them our, the seats are good, they have two bungees for holding gear and we got the paddles with the kayak!! They work fantastic for the many rivers we love to run around here.

Submitted by: ndimmick on 5/30/2018

For the price ($175 on sale at Menards including a surprisingly light paddle), it's hard to beat this for a kid’s boat. Our teens prefer them to our more expensive "real" kayaks. They are surprisingly fast and have lots of primary stability. Two of the seats began ripping during the first season, but the company was quick to send me replacements for free. There are no bulkheads or built in flotation, so we usually put a dry bag or two in the stern in case of swamping. Compared to Sun Dolphins and other big box store boats, these are the best I’ve seen for the money.

Sold my canoe and purchased the lime green viper 10.4 from Menards. Have taken it out three times on local rivers, fast and slow, it tracks ok and is easy to maneuver. So much easier to paddle than my old 18 ft aluminum canoe. Needed something for one person and that is easy to carry by myself. I am a larger person at 6 foot 270 lbs, and I am rather comfortable inside. I only wish the backrest was taller, It is pretty stable, even with my weight. In 2017, the paddle is no longer included, but I did get both with the 11% rebate. So far only one of plastic seat fasteners broke, but easy to replace. I also replaced the front and rear pad-eyes with stainless steel pad-eyes and stainless steel T nuts under for additional strength.

I added a Minn Kota Endura c30 trolling motor to mine and have a 105ah battery that fits in back. I had to do a little trimming to the opening to get the battery to fit, but it worked out great. I can easily go all day on a charge with a top speed of about 4 mph.

I purchased this kayak from our local Menards. It is made of hard plastic. So far I have no complaints. This kayak is great on our local reservoirs as well as on the beaches of Michigan. Even my 3 and 5 year old sons love riding in the kayak as either my wife or I paddle them. I feel for the price of these kayaks, it is a very good beginners package to see if you are interested in this hobby. It is so relaxing that I almost fell asleep in it. I am sure that your normal entry level kayak experience would be awesome with this.

Submitted by: guest-paddler on 10/13/2015
We picked up two Viper 10.4 kayaks from Menards during their Black Friday sale last year. They were only $150 each including the paddle. At this price, I consider these an excellent deal for entry level slow water paddling. Our teenaged kids really love them, preferring them over my better kayak for some reason. They are blunt and pretty slow, but they are stable and easy to turn. Due to the shape of the deck on cockpit, there is nothing to keep waves from coming in over the top. In the class 1 rivers near us, they are a great boat for beginners and kids. Our son prefers to stand up in his. The seats are poorly made and ripping after just a few uses. I contacted the manufacturer who promptly sent us replacement seats.

Submitted by: codebrown on 9/30/2015
I considered rating this a 1, but the price makes it appealing to introduce people, especially kids, to kayaking.

The price is good if you are looking for something that will get you on the water. For the kit, $175. I've seen a lot of these being purchased around the shore of a small lake I paddle frequently. However, I seldom see them used.

It has a flat bottom, so primary stability is incredible and the cockpit is huge so even the largest paddler can climb in and out. Best use would be for fishing small lakes or letting kids paddle near shore.

The material is a very thin, cheap poly that will break down or warp in the sun fairly quickly.
Instead of slicing through the water, it plows its way through, giving the feeling that the boat is braking between paddle strokes - which can be frustrating after a while.
There is very little gliding or tracking and the stern waggles significantly with each paddle stroke.

Ok for a starter for kids, but I would recommend looking for something that has a little more streamlining.

Submitted by: jamoaque on 9/21/2015
After another paddle in the Viper 10.4, I felt I should give an update to my 8-5-15 review with several key things to point out. First one is that I noticed that there is no flotation means inside the kayak, neither bow or stern. Second is that the stern storage, although it has a well-sealing lid, is not a sealed compartment, so the water on the floor of the kayak can run back into the stern chamber. (As long as you use a dry bag though, it does offer a lot of rear storage). Lastly, since this yak does not have a sharply-defined front or rear "keel" (like, for example, the Old Town Vapor 10), it has a little bit of a "wag" to it as you paddle, but the advantage is that you can turn very sharply – so this maneuverability makes it excellent for small, narrow streams that wind around a lot.

We have had 2 Viper kayaks for 2 years now. We were new to kayaking but go often now my husband has built a rack to fit our trailer. We have done numerous small lakes and been on Lake Erie. I can't swim and i hesitated at first but the stability of the device had won me over. We fish from them and paddle at night by placing lights in hold. We plan on purchasing 2 more when funds permit! Highly recommend.

For the person on a budget, you can't beat the viper. For under $200 you get the kayak and paddles. It weighs about 50# so not to heavy. It tracks fairly well and is almost un-tippable. I use it on lakes and 1and small 2 rivers, and it does great.

I purchased two Viper 10.4 kayaks during a black Friday sale. The kayak tracks well and has a 300 lb. capacity which makes it ideal for multi-day paddling depending on your weight. I have only used the kayak on lakes but would like to try on moving water. For the price, the kayaks were a great buy since we are beginner paddlers. It is a great way to test your skills as a paddler. Both readily fit on the roof of a Jeep Patriot once we installed crossbars and racks. I recommend these kayaks to beginner paddlers and people who just want to get on the water.

This small kayak performed well in a slow river in mid- state Michigan. The shallow draft hardly ever got hung up on shallow spots, and I'm a big guy. The kayak seat and foot pegs were comfortable. We had two long portages, and the handles made it easy enough to lift the kayaks over some trees. This is a great kayak for beginner and intermediate kayakers.

The snap together ones that come with the kayaks are not the best and only have one adjustment.

This seems to be a decent basic kayak for moderate recreational use. The rating of 7 is based on the overall world of kayaking. If we factor in the economical price tag, I would bump it up to 8 as far as how much you get for you money, especially if you can get it on one of its typical sales. It has a nice sampling of basic features such as deck bungees, cup holders, stern storage, some seat padding, etc. It seems to handle well, track OK, and cruise OK for its length and beam: 3.2 to 3.7 mph with a steady to firm paddling, and 4.2 to 4.7 at a sprint.

They saw pictures of people flipping over and thought that would happen to them. It is so stable that none of them had trouble feeling like they would tip. I have had about 8 go buy there own after trying it. I love the sales that Menards has on them too! A GREAT buy and well worth the price. For the price and what you get, this is a great kayak. Sure its not going to be very fast, or track all that great, but for the people looking at an entry level kayak, this one is hard to beat. Cockpit size is great, no dry storage, but dry bags work just fine. Seat isn't overly comfortable, but good enough for a few hours playing on the water. Great way to get on the water for a small investment.

Great boat for the money. I picked up my Viper 10.4 for $199 at Menards in the early spring of 2015. I paddled the Boundary Waters as a teenager and have always loved being out on the water. I've always wanted a self propelled boat, but just hadn't had the chance until recently. Finally, now that I'm in my 30s, I picked this up as an entry level craft to go paddle the Fox River and get a feel for the type of craft I really need, canoe vs kayak. I think it's important to add the caveat that I am 6'4 - 240 lbs. If you're a big man or woman, this review is for you.

Positives of this kayak include: lightweight, durable (so far), plenty of room in the cockpit, cup holder, foot braces (not quite deep enough for me, but a nice addition to a normal sized paddler), nice tie down system, can beat it up a bit without feeling bad.

Negatives: paddles like a tank, doesn't track well. This could be due to my size, or the construction. The bottom of the boat has a dual keel, and very dull entry lines.

From a value perspective, this boat is a 10/10. Any novice paddler would do well to purchase the Viper 10.4. It'll get you on the water safely and inexpensively. And give you great perspective on what you are looking for when you want to step it up to the real deal.

I'm a big guy (320#). I bought this as a birthday present to myself to start paddling in a major float stream I live near. I did one four-mile float in it so far on a very wide, slow-moving part of the river. I have to say that at this point, I enjoyed it very much.

Even though I'm well over it's stated 300# carrying capacity, the higher sides and wide base made this boat very usable for me. It's light weight and shorter length means that I can toss it in the back of my Dodge Dakota without the need for a roof rack and carry it in and out of put-ins/take-outs easily by myself.

For a beginner boat, I think you would be hard-pressed to find a better value for your money.

Decent kayak for the price. The seat lasted about 6 trips before it needed to be replaced. Of course I didn't have my receipt so Viper did nothing to work with me as far as warranty.

Good kayak for beginners. It is an inexpensive entry level yak. Its slow but stable. It can't keep up with other kayaks. It stains easily and gouges. I also have found I get sore after several hours in it.

I've used the Viper 10.4 four times this year and am really happy with it. I've sat in it for 4 hours without having any back pain. The HD polyethelene has held up nicely in a couple of shaky places that we've taken them. I would recommend them to other people interested in purchasing a kayak.

I did read reviews from others before we purchased our Viper kayaks @ Menards. They are awesome. We really could not go wrong for $199. Some may think that the back hatch not being a dry one is a negative. Not so because there is a drain plug in the back. It is so nice for cleaning and to empty it. That's what dry bags are for. We designed our own paddle ties and put an eye bolt on them for security. I love that there is 2 water bottle holders. Can't say enough....LOVE them!

Wow what a great kayak to kick off your novice paddling! Very easy to navigate, virtually impossible to tip over, and stable enough to fish out of.

We purchased two of these lighter weight recreational kayaks to use on a slower river, no rapids higher than a low 3, and boy were they fun! Took them this weekend to a small lake, again... Loads of fun! Even did some angling.

These kayaks got us back out on the water and having fun again! Solid and inexpensive, sold along with paddles at Menards.
