I purchased my Scott Echo 16 in 1993 and use it primarily on small lakes and calm rivers. I've done multi-day trips into Algonquin with it loaded to capacity. This has proven to be a terrific boat for the price. Fully loaded it handled better than than the Swift Prospectors in the group.

It may not be the fastest canoe on the water, but the keel vertical bow/stern help it track well, maneuverability in narrow winding streams has never been a problem, and it's bow height means it takes on virtually no water even in a heavy chop. The fibreglass boat is a bit heavy to portage, but I've been managing fine for the past 22 years on 2-3 trips back country trips each summer

My wife won a Scott Echo 16…

My wife won a Scott Echo 16 foot fiberglass canoe a few years ago locally. We were able to use it and compare it to our 16 foot Woodstream fiberglass canoe. We found the Woodstream performed better. That is, the Woodstream was quicker on the water, while remaining easy to control. Friends took the Scott on a trip to Quetico Park and after the trip, one of the pair, who had previous experience paddling a Swift canoe (not sure which model), said the Scott was a slow boat by comparison! Admittedly this is a review based on limited information. I've therefore given it a 'not too bad', 7!

My father in-law has the more…

My father in-law has the more basic layup of this model (Echo 16) and my wife and I use it for day trips and the odd longer trip. The boat is about 10-15 years old but has weathered and held up well.

Overall we like the way it handles. It's fairly fast for the length and the keel, but also it tracks well. Stability is decent and it's pretty maneuverable. We haven't done much river work with the boat - I don't want to break the boat...

We did a shorter trip with it last weekend with two big packs (and my 215 lb. self in the bow). I wouldn't put much more in it, but it carried us fine with stability and freeboard and didn't take on much spray in 2ft waves. The rental boats were Scott Prospectors and ours was noticeably faster.

We're interested in buying our first boat and have been demo'ing boats. We're interested in something a bit larger for bringing our dog along and for bigger trips. There are faster and nicer-paddling designs out there, but the Scott is still a really nice and versatile boat. I think it's marketed as a lower-capacity beginner's boat and that's fair. The fiberglass version is also pretty reasonably priced.

Just get a deep dish yoke if you portage! The factory one wasn't friendly. The best $50 you'll spend, guaranteed. The ~60lb fiberglass model wasn't terrible to carry.
