Wanted a Dry Top but for sea…

Submitted by: paddler234928 on 3/22/2013
Wanted a Dry Top but for sea kayaking and for practision roll, and without a hood. Looking after something durable and good quality. This jacket's fabric is definitely durable, and the DWR coating repels water like crazy (excellent water beading). I was mainly concerned that the jacket may be overkill for touring since it's heavy and sturdy. In fact my first impression when I tried it on was that it was too bulky and noisy. Fortunately the weight (it's heavy) rests on the shoulders, not in the arms.

Now when I went into the water, all the concerns went away immediately. A stormy day, 35km/h wind, and 2 feet chop and the last of my worries was the jacket, I just wanted to stay dry, the cag inspired confidence so within minutes I was having fun, rolling in waves. This cag keeps me dry and warm (it is warmer that others, bare in mind). It is now my top choice for practicing and touring in cold or big seas conditions.

For long touring and expedition in warmer season I got a Peak uk Tourlite Double, that complements very well with the Creek especially since its got a velcro open collar, however the Tourlite's DWR is less efficient and the neoprene gasket leaks a lot so it's a no go for practicing or rolling.

The inner skirt fabric is also top quality, which is not always the case in other cags. Seams and latex are also top notch.

On the cons: It's got reinforcements everywhere which is a good thing, again a bit overkill if not into WW. I found just a bit of water gets trapped near the upper sleeve and should leak easier, but not a biggie. The size chart is accurate however chest/shoulder size is wider than usual.

Overall I'm very happy, I know this Creek Jacket is not aimed at Touring, but still I find it a fantastic piece of kit and it shines good quality materials and construction. If you are not rolling, practicing, or going underwater; it's probably overkill for you and a lighter/all rounder jacket is a better choice. However as soon as you hit the water or foul weather you will appreciate how well this cag takes care of you, it truly shines in those conditions.
