Trip Overview

Valley Creek is located in western Jefferson County. It is a very beautiful stream that is little known as an excellent place for paddling. It meanders westward for approximately 72 nautical miles from downtown Birmingham until it empties into the Black Warrior River at Clevingers Marina.

This stream is abundant with wildlife both in and around the water. As you paddle you will notice a pair of grey Cranes who have apparently made it their job to escort paddlers downstream. If you are lucky enough(and quiet enough)you may even meet a family of river otter as you make your way.

There are a few rapids scattered here and there but they are easy enough for the novice to handle, yet still give the adrenaline junkies a thrill.

As with most streams the best time to paddle is early spring.Be sure to check the water level, after about the middle of June you will do more walking than paddling.

All in all,you will love paddling the Valley Creek.

Fees:

$3.00 parking fee at Clevingers Marina

Directions:

From Birmingham take I-20 west approx. 12-15 mi.Take Academy Drive exit.Turn right onto Academy Dr.,Powder Plant Road turn right, straight until bridge,Valley Creek runs under the bridge.Or keep straight to Johns Rd.Turn left and drive approx.3-4 mi. this bridge also crosses Valley Creek.

Launches:

Powder Plant Road Bridge - Put-in across road from plant. There is a concrete culvert at the waters edge that provides a good launching point. No vehicle vandelism has experienced. From this area it is about a 2 1/2 hr. paddle to the take-out at the bridge on Johns Rd.,just outside of Adger.

Johns Rd. Bridge-This is an excellent put-in.there is plenty of parking and launching space.Vehicles are safe left here. From this point it is about a 6-7 hour paddle to the next bridge, more if you fish or stop for breaks.the better rapids are on this leg of the creek.Take-out fot this stretch is at the Lock 17 Road bridge in Oak Grove. The take-out here is so-so,there is a short but somewhat steep bank you will have to carry your gear up.

This is right below a residence,so be sure to not block the drives or the gate leading down to the water.

This is also the last public access take-out or put-in that is known until you get to the Warrior river, where you can take-out at Clevingers Marina. You can leave a shuttle vehicle here for a $3.00,there is a small wooden box located directly by the boat launch.
