Trip Overview

Terrapin Creek is a 8 mile run pf mild class 1 and with heavy rain some rock outcroppings turn into a class 2. This run is located in northeast Alabama is a favorite summer float with many spots to stop and swim. The creek is divided into two sections. The upper section is from Frank Stewart Bridge down to the Terrapin outdoor center. The second is from terrapin Outdoor center till you get to Ellisville Bridge. Both sections can be easily run within the coarse of a summer day. The people are friendly at the canoe shop and will rent and shuttle you for a reasonable fee. Water is runable year round, but spring time the flow is up due to rain and can be more fun around 9 foot is optimal..anything 8 and your picking rocks. Above 11 foot and the banks wash out. Makes for an interesting float, but use caution.

Accommodations:

The only thing around the river is Terrapin Outdoor center. It is a fully operational canoe and kayak shop with restrooms . They operate year round weather permitting. If you get there and its locked up just drive own down to the house and knock at the door. Ask for Mike or Bobby Warren.

Directions:

From Piedmont Alabama take hwy 9 towards centre Alabama. about 4 mile down hwy 9 is the canoe shop. You will see the creek where you need to turn, this is also the put-in for the second part of the creek.. The first put in is at Frank Stewart bridge turn at the canoe shop and drive alone the dirt road till you dead end into a paved road turn left and there is a section to park next to the bridge.

Launches:

The canoe shop is what I consider the best option for rendezvous at the creek. There is plenty of parking and if you forget something then they may be able to help you out. Plus you car and stuff is safe at TOC. In the past there has been trouble with some of the locals living next to the put-in at Frank Stewart Bridge. Even though it has quieted down I would be leery about parking there. As far as the takeouts, both are easy. Either take-out at the canoe shop or Ellisville.

Contact:

Terrapin outdoor center is a good source of info on the creek since it is nestled on the creek itself contact mike or bobby warren at 256-447-6666 for more info on terrapin creek www.canoeshop.net is the web site dedicated to terrapin creek ran by the outdoor center.
