Sweet Water State Park in Georgia

Trip Overview

Sweet Water State Park is the water supply for East Point, GA. It is a little over 200 acres. There are no gas engines allowed (except for park rangers, and they are very courteous to paddle craft). The lake is divided into two sections, the upper section is accessible thru a tunnel that runs under the main road. You will find many birds, turtles and the occasional water snake here.

This is my lake of choice to "just get out on the water for a couple of hours. Be aware of the people that are bank fishing all around the lake. The fishing in the main body is ok, but being a man made lake you will have to search them out. If the wind is blowing, and it frequently is, chop can be as high as 1-1 1/2 feet. Also there are miles of hiking trails, the old civil war mill ruins and a substantial water fall on the creek. White water paddlers can run the creek, not sure where they put in though.

This is a very nice day trip with clean restrooms at the boat ramp and pavilions for picnics.

Restroom at bait shop, bait shop, concrete boat ramp, secure parking.

Fees:

$1 to park, $2 ramp fee. Annual pass is available.

Directions:

Take I-20 west from Atlanta, exit #44 at Thornton Road, turn left and go 1/4 mile. Turn right on Blairs Bridge Road, go 2 miles and turn left on Mount Vernon Road.
