Trip Overview

South River- Lyndhurst to Crimora

This estimated 14-15 mile trip starts at the bridge on Hwy 664 (down from Waynesboro Nurseries) almost to the intersection of Lyndhurst Rd.

The water here moves fairly swiftly at first, but then evens out to a calmer paddle. This upper section of the river is very beautiful as it passes by some farm and residential property. There are several class I and a couple of approaching class II rapids in this section. The river is unobsructed until just past the Interstate 64 bridge where there is a large tree blocking passage (I learned the hard way).

The river continues to meander into Waynesboro, passing through Ridgeview Park. After the park and just before the bridge at Wayne Ave (down from the YMCA), there is another tricky rapid that may qualify as a full class II. Some may choose to go around this rapid which can be easily done.

Between the Wayne Ave bridge and Constitution Park (adjacent to Invista/DuPont property), you will need get out and carry your boat around two small dams. Thrill seekers could attempt going over these dams, but only experienced paddlers in my opinion.

From Waynesboro to Crimora the river flows past farm country. There are several challenging spots due to obstructions/trees. Only one other time did I need to take my boat out to go around a snag of logs/debris.

Trip took 5 hrs including 2-3 brief stops.
