South Forked Deer River in Tennessee

Trip Overview

We put in at the Unionville Road bridge near Dyersburg. From there we floated downriver to the Split of the North Forked Deer. Then we turned around and paddled upstream to take out at the same place we put in. The total trip took about 4 hours and was 6.6 miles in length. The water is semi clear with few snags. A packed sandy bottom and several nice beaches to pull out and rest if needed. It is a nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon but is a pretty good upper body workout as well. Currents are swift at times but manageable to most skill levels.

Directions:

Take hwy 51 South from Dyersburg about 3 miles. At "Four Corners" turn right and go about 1 mile. You will come to the bridge. The ramp is just below the bridge next to a couple of houses.
