Trip Overview

Depart from the kayak launch at South River Outfitters, 7647 Lost River Rd. Stuart, FL 34997. Travel south. For the first 25 minutes you will be paddling through the back of houses. River level is controlled by the ocean tide so when you are paddling behind the houses stay in the middle of the channel. Not a bad advice throughout.

Once you clear the last home you will be in Florida the way the pioneers found it. From this point on all you have to know is make all the left turns until you turn around at which time you make right turns.

Depending on the climate you can find great blue herons, egrets, cormorants, anhingas, otters, manatees and an occasional Florida gator. No fear they do not eat or attack kayaks. If they did they would be the size of elephants and make national headlines.

Approximately 75 Minutes and 3.1 paddling miles later you will find a kayak pullout and picnic area located inside Halpatiokee Park. Bring snack grab your belongings and enjoy the ride back. For those more adventurous there you can paddle another 10 minutes through more confined waterways but well worth it.

This is my default paddling location and have made the trip dozens of times and never get tired. Judging by the number of regulars I am not alone. Certainly a must see location.
