Shenango River in Pennsylvania

Trip Overview

We are novice kayakers and wanted to have a little more adventure. This section of Shenango River is NW of New Castle. Nice float and paddle of about 4.5 miles, took us an hour and 40 minutes, in no hurry. Parking and concrete ramp at both sites. We were notified that 3/4 of the way down there is a hazard marked with red flag; fallen trees from both banks. I got out and scanned the hazard and saw a small path through; it looked easier and safer than our portage option. The three of us made it through easily. The uncertainty did increase the excitement level. We will kayak here again sometime.
