Trip Overview

Shearon Harris Reservoir is the closest large body of water to our house so when we purchased our canoe, this was the first place we went to try it out. The family and I regularly hike the peninsula trails at Harris Park but this was our first time out on the water.

In the main park there is a car top launch but be prepared to port your craft about 150ft of flat trail from the parking lot to the water. We opted to go to the other side of the lake to the Bartley Holeman Rd launch which is one of 2 on the lake. The launches can be quite crowded later in the day so get there early to avoid the power boats. There is small dirt area on the west side of the launch that is suitable for launching kayaks or canoes. From here, you can easily paddle across the lake and take advantage of the facilities and fishing spots at the peninsula without too much bother from power boats.

Over all, a nice day out although being 4th of July weekend the power boats were out in force and I probably will just get a dolly and port the canoe at the car top site in the future to avoid the boat traffic.
