Trip Overview

Rutherford Beach is located in central Cameron Parish south of the communities of Creole and Oak Grove. It is located at the old (natural) mouth of the Mermentau River allowing for shallow water estuary canoeing/kayaking through the old Mermentau River system and Gulf activities to the east toward Grand Chenier and to the west toward Cameron. Many miles of beaches are accessible along the coast and the area is known for birding and shell collecting. A combined Gulf and Mermentau River trip might include paddling up the Mermentau for about 9 miles to the Mermentau River Navigation Channel Gulf outlet, then out in the Gulf to the close in rigs and back to the west along the coast to Rutherford Beach.

Directions:

See map at www.creolenaturetrail.org Coming from Lake Charles drive south on Hwy 27 to Creole. Continue south on Hwy 82 to Oak Grove. Turn west on Parish Road 357 / Trosclair Road. Go 1 1/2 miles to Rutherford Beach Road. Turn South on Rutherford Beach Road. Go 2 miles to the beach.
