Trip Overview

This was a short afternoon trip on Queens Creek launching from New Quarter Park across from Camp Perry. You drive down a dirt road after checking in with the park ranger (no fee) who opens the gate. There is a short portage down the bank to the sandy shore.

From the park's kayak launch we headed east toward the York River and turned west when we got to Cub Creek. This is a small creek separating Cheatham Annex from the park. Since it was low tide when we arrived we could only go 1.1 miles up the creek before bottoming out. (High tide adds another 1/2 mile access). We enjoyed the early spring warmth and the protection of the trees near shore kept winds slight.

We spotted some early osprey arrivals as well as 2 eagles that appear to be nesting in Cheatham. Kingfishers and Red bellied woodpeckers rounded out the sights of the afternoon in fine fashion. Lots of deer and raccoon tracks were in the mud by the water and we checked out some oyster hatcheries. There is no development or nearby roads anywhere along this creek.

On our return we paddled down Queens Creek for a ways toward the York River to look at the marshes by Camp Perry and Cheatham. The trees aren't leafing out yet but it was still beautiful.

A more extensive paddle could be had by heading all the way downstream to the York River or alternately heading 2.5 miles upstream to the mouth of Queens Creek.
