Presque Isle Harbor / Lake Huron in Michigan

Trip Overview

Area is somewhat off the beaten path but well worth the trip for the scenery and two lighthouses that are located on the point. For kayaks or canoe, the day trip starts at the beach in Presque Isle Harbor, or at the boat launch provided by the state. You may want to pack a lunch or before starting the afternoon trip stop in at the Portage Restaurant or small Pizza shop.

The trip will take about 3 -4 hours at a slow pace, and Lake Huron is calm, not often. Over half of the trip is on open waters of Lake Huron, be sure to check the local weather for approaching storms and or high winds before starting you trip. Once launched paddle Northeast towards the Old lighthouse located at the S.E. end of the anvil shaped point.

The shoreline is rocky but if desired you many beach your boat and take a half hour or so tour of the lighthouse, the keepers cottage and grounds. A donation is requested to enter this cottage; donations help the preservation of this lighthouse.

Continue your trip out onto Lake Huron traveling Northwest along the East shoreline of the point. Most of this part of the trip is just the pleasure of being out on open water and enjoying what we cherish most, sun, water and peace of mind.

As you approach the Northwest end of the point still on the east shoreline the "New" lighthouse can be seen. You can again beach and rest at this area before rounding the North end of the point. In the waters of the north end of the point are large submersed rocks that can be seen through the very clear Lake Huron water. If the day is warm and light breezes, somewhat clam this may be a good place to take that swim if so incline. Also remembering that the beach is rocky. Only area of sand on the trip would be at the south end of North Bay. This beach is just across the road from where you started. It's only a short walk back to your vehicle from here.

There is a parking lot at the North Bay beach, it is private, but so far it has remained open for all so far. This beach is one of the only spots on Lake Huron that a sunset can be viewed in the summer. The New lighthouse is open during the summer and the tower can be climbed again for a small donation, but well worth it!!
