Pigeon River - West Olive Michigan

A self-supported trip created by joekorepta

Trip Overview

This is a very easy Kayak trip. Put in is at the Ottawa County Park of Hemlock Crossing (near US 31in West Olive, Mi.). They have a very nice put in with steps and a dock and rest rooms. Once in, you can follow the Pigeon River all the way to Lake Pigeon Lake and if you want a bit more challenge you can continue on to Lake Michigan. The river follows through two County parks and you can see a lot of wildlife and in the spring fish break the water while they come up the river from Lake Michigan to spawn. The trip can be as long or as short as you want, however the scenery is so beautiful especially in the spring / early summer that you will want to take your time. You can also continue another mile or so to Lake Michigan and paddle in the waves or pull ashore on the beach. There is a good take out point at the State of Michigan boat launch (off of Lake Shore Drive) (fee charged) however Consumers Power has a small park across the road where there are a couple of good take out points. You can park your car in the Consumers park (free) if you want a one way trip. You can also paddle upstream back to Hemlock Crossing as the current is very gentile. All in all this is a great day trip for people either new to Kayaking or just wanting to spend the day on a beautiful river and lake or paddle out to Lake Michigan for some fun in the waves..
