Paddling Quebec's Saguenay Fjord

Trip Overview

This is a true wilderness experience as you spend 5 1/2 days paddling down the river and through the fjord with its towering cliffs flanking both shores. Each night you will camp at one of the reserved provincial campsites equipped with tent platforms, a picnic table, and an outhouse and views of the river. Distances covered range from 9 -12 miles a day and conditions can vary from calm to challenging 2'-3' seas, either taken head on or as following seas, when the winds pick up. Besides the spectacular scenery of this fjord, with any luck you will encounter the docile and curious Beluga whales as they migrate up and down the fjord feeding on the krill and small fish. Plus there is a good possibility that you will spot gray seals, MInke whales and perhaps even a Fin as you near the mouth of the fjord.

Safety Notes

This trip is only for expedition-style sea kayaks with bulkheaded compartments. Landings and launchings at each campsite can be tricky since there s a 18'20' tidal range and often times you will be dealing with low tide, carrying boats over slippery rocks and muddy areas.

Gear Notes

The upper part of the Saguenay is brackish and relatively warm but as you paddle down the river nearing the St. Lawrence, the water gets very cold and one must be prepared with either a wetsuit or proper layers. Think about it - if the whales are there it is cold.

Conditions

Weather can change very suddenly in the Fjord causing the paddling conditions to quickly go from calm to 2'-3' waves in a matter of minutes. One needs to have a strong forward stroke and sweep strokes to handle their kayak in these more challenging conditions.
