Ouachita River in Arkansas

Trip Overview

The wife and I went to the dragover campground on the Ouachita River near Mount Ida, AR. It was a nice place to camp. The dragover float camp is especially nice if you do not have arrangments for a downstream pickup - the river makes a 3-mile horseshoe bend and the put-in and take-out are 1/4 mile apart. So all you do is launch, paddle 3 miles, stop at take-out, and a short walk to your car.

The rapids are class I-II with calm pools in between. It took me 1.5 hours to make the loop once. One could easily make the loop 4 times in a day with long breaks, swimming, and fishing. There are also nearby canoe rentals in Mount Ida in case you dont feel like hauling your own boat.

The scenery is decent but not spectacular. I would not recommend paddling this river if the gague is below 2.0 ft. Stage data is avaliable through USGS website.
