Trip Overview

This is a great place for beginners. I took my family for the first time 4 years ago. My son was only 9. This year we took 30 teenagers and 10 adults. They had a terrific time. The water was below 7.5 which made the trek a little harder than I had wished for. I prefer the water to be above 8.5.

There are 3 larger waterfalls on the first 7.5 miles. There are actually 13 miles on this trip if you want to do the entire trip, or you can do just the 7.5, which is the best part, and get out at Faichild landing where you can use a cellphone to call for a pickup. The 13 mile takes you back to Okatoma Outdoor Post. Of all the folks with us, the worst we got were blisters.

Beautiful weather made the trip very nice. There are a few trees to get around which are mostly remnants of hurricane Katrina, but I only had to get out once to portage my boat only a couple of feet.

Accommodations:

Fantastic accommodations. They have plenty of kayaks and canoes to accommodate very large groups. They also provide a shuttle service for you personal water craft. There is a lodge, cabins, tepees, RV sites and tent camping sites on location. There are plenty of hotels in Hattiesburg. We stayed in the lodge. It was a terrific place to house our group.

Outfitting:

Ronnie and Lisa Robinson are the owners of Okatoma Outdoor Post. I don't think you could meet a nicer couple. They go out of their way to insure you have a great time. It helps them if you make reservations so they can have everything ready and waiting when you get there.

Directions:

From Baton Rouge we took I-12 East to I-59 North into Hattiesburg. At Hattiesburg we took exit 67-B on Hwy. 49. We traveled approximately 8 miles and took a right following the Okatoma Outdoor Post signs after crossing the Bouie River Bridge. Okatoma Outdoor Post is about 3 miles down on the right.
