Mississippi River in Missouri

Trip Overview

Friday night we set up at john hay recreation area camping is free ! Saturday we loaded up two 10ft sit on top kayaks and headed to the put in spot there are many to pick from along the river some time on google earth will help you find some gems where 4 wheel drive is needed but for this trip we went to Quincy Il via Illinois 57 to radio road to the boat ramp!

The river was up and muddy running strong at 14ft on the Hannibal gauge a lot of debris up to entire trees moving downstream that made for a fast trip to Hannibal in around 5 hours and that's over 20 miles . we saw a few eagles and many fish but no Asian (sharks) this trip.

There was much going on in Hannibal directly across the river from our campsite on the Illinois side so we went to the marina boat ramp and hit the downtown for a few hours !big mistake with the rate the river was flowing the treck back across was no fun at one point the river had taken us farther downstream than we originally had to go to get across it finally we made shore on a island and recouped but it took us over an hour to cross the river and it was quite strenuous.

All in all it was another great trip but unless the river is down I would not try to cross the Mississippi in a 10 ft kayak
