Trip Overview

Lake Ahquabi is a small (115 acres) but very beautiful lake in south-central Iowa. Ahquabi remains a favorite spot for me due to its variety, beauty and wildlife.

There are several inlets to meander through and enjoy the wildlife, but also plenty of open water for the fitness paddlers. The shoreline constantly changes from marshland areas, to picnic areas with trimmed grass, to heavily forested areas that line a great deal of the lakeshore.

Accommodations:

Restrooms are near the beach. There is a boat ramp on the north side. A swimming beach and boat rental facility are on the south side (another easy place to launch from). There are several shelters to land near and enjoy a paddling break.

I often take a bicycle with me and enjoy some off-road hiking/biking trails while in the park. The variety of facilities (beach, boating, fishing, playground areas, etc.) make this a great spot for the entire family.

Fees:

None

Directions:

Lake Ahquabi and the state park are just 5 miles south of Indianola, IA on Hwy.65/69.
