Kayak the Algarve on the South Coast of Portugal

Trip Overview

The south coast of Portugal, called the Algarve is your destination for this wonderful week. For your comfort you will stay at Quinta das Palmeiras during your stay on the Algarve coast. The driving distances are not too long and make this possible. By staying in the same area you will also get to know it better than if you were staying at a different place each night. Lagos is a historic Portuguese town located on the western edge of the Algarve. Surrounded by some of the most beautiful coastline in Portugal and these marvelous beaches have the contributed to the transformation of Lagos into one of the most popular destinations of the Algarve. Lagos, with its position on the on the western edge of the Algarve, lends itself to be the ideal location to paddle the surrounding area.

We paddled this trip this year and it was just great!

We paddled this trip this year and it was just great! Rui and his team are completely professional and entirely in tune with the level of paddler or wishes of the group regarding what how and where they wish to paddle. They are a lot of fun and always there to help. I have complete confidence in their technical skills and ability to make sure the paddle is safe and well managed. I have in previous years paddled the Douro River with Rui and his team under the skilled oversight of Jack  Atkinson - a legend in this Portugal paddle world! Rui has all the elements of a team to make this new destination a great fun time for all grades of paddler - his fellow paddler team are fun, skilled and willing to help on and off the water. Rui's kayaks are near new and in fine condition.

Be honest and tell Rui just what you want or expect and you will have a great holiday.

He will make it happen!

Highly recommended trip

I had the distinct pleasure of being one of the group to paddle with this team in October 2017. The gear provided was top notch, and we were given a choice of boat style. The guides were warm and friendly and catered to our requests. They had keen awareness for safety and gave any refresher instruction requested. Each day was well explained and flexible around the sea levels. Restaurant choices...well, not a plate or glass had leftover crumbs or drops. Fantastic evenings of laughs and local culture. And the best part, the paddling was simply spectacular. Shall I say screensaver? Brilliant blue skies, crashing surf, statuesque cliffs and the caves....just check out the photos. Breathtaking colours of rocks and intriguing formations. Trip of a lifetime...and combined with Douro River, well, speechless really! One piece of advice...go!

One of the great trips on one of the great coastlines!

I have done some amazing paddles - Baja California, Costa Rica, Florida Keys, Saguenay Fjord - and let me tell you this is right up with them all. This is what you can look forward to: rock hopping and cave hopping through the ancient craggy coast of the Algarve, exploring the mighty history of this sea-faring nation through ancient towns and monuments such as Lagos and Sagres, eating and drinking great west mediterranean cuisine, gazing on landscapes shaped by man back to Neolithic times (alarmingly dry when we were there a few weeks ago), being led by multi-lingual, highly skilled and knowledgeable guides in excellent equipment who have planned everything down to the last detail. Rui has worked out a delicate balance of all of the above, which, as you can imagine is no easy task.

You should be a kayaker who doesn't mind a bit of bounce and if you haven't yet done a wet exit Rui will make sure you are comfortable doing so. You don't have to be highly skilled and we had no issues at all. I have total confidence in Rui and his little team to handle any situation however unlikely to arise.

I made friends, rediscovered Portugal (last visit 1975), and can't wait to go back.

Algarve by Sea - Oh Yeah!

This year I was lucky enough to join Douro Kayak Expeditions on their maiden tour of the Algarve coast by sea. In 2016, I travelled with this group down the Douro River for a magnificent week in northern Portugal’s port wine country, so I was looking forward to seeing the team again for the Algarve coast – and they did not disappoint.

Led by Rui Calado, a BCU4* kayaker, and his team of Daniel Afonso and Filipe Santos we kayaked by the towns of Sagres, Praia da Luz, Portimão, Armação de Pera, Albureiro, and Praia da Rocha. We were joined by other travels from Great Britain, Australia and Canada. We paddled some nice ocean swell, rock gardening among majestic cliffs, and very cool cave exploration. We enjoyed the Algarve from a perspective that can only be obtained by kayak. Those of us that wanted a little more adventure explored the rocky coast with one team member while others that wanted to stay further out to sea paddled with another.

The entire team, including Jack Atkinson, owner of Douro Kayak Expeditions, was professional, safety conscious, easy-going, patient, and best of all FUN! We ate breakfast together each morning as we planned our day, packed our lunches to eat at a lunch spot on a gorgeous beach or in a sea cave (tide permitting), and had dinner in local restaurants eating traditional Portuguese dishes.

This is not a trip for newbies but advance beginners and intermediate paddlers will love it. It is ocean paddling so you should be able to handle swell and some small surf, know how to wet exit, and be rescued.

I highly recommend this trip and this TEAM! I’m a fan and hope to be back again soon.
