Drayton Harbor - Dakota Creek Estuary in Washington

Trip Overview

Put in at Drayton Harbor marina and paddled east across the harbor. High tide filled the bay (3/4 empty at low tide). Clear day and beautiful views of Mt. Baker to east and Canadian peaks to north (still haven't learned their names yet). Fall colors starting to tinge the trees. Had to paddle circuitous route as we neared Dakota Creek as several anglers worked the area. Leaping salmon explained the presence of the fishermen. The estuary is fairly short, quiet, shady, and full of herons. A rising westerly wind gave us a bit of a workout on the trip back.

Directions:

I-5 north to Blaine - take last exit before Canada - A left then a right takes you to Marine Park and the marina.
