Colorado River in Arizona

Trip Overview

This is not the stereo typical weekend event. It was the sixth annual Bullhead City AZ Regatta, the event included a Kayak race on the ninth. The start is LeMans style beginning at Davis Camp just below the Davis Dam. The event is shepherded by Desert Kayak Adventures located in Bullhead City. A not too serious race starts at a city run camp site along the Colorado River and ends in Rotary Park 11 miles down river.

I had a lot of fun and watched the following days Regatta that included huge floats with jet ski assisted navigation, with approximately 30,000 attendees it was chaotic but fun as hell.

I also took time to put my Kayak in at Katherine's Landing on Lake Mojave for some fishing and quiet time away from festivities. Google Bullhead city regatta and plan to visit small town fun with a great fun regatta comprised of everything but the kitchen sink floating on the Colorado River.

The Regatta is tuned to the younger crowd although I saw many from my Boomer age group. I don't recommend small children at the Regatta but again there are many other water opportunities at Lake Mojave or even at Needls Ca junction an hour away. I truly enjoyed the Kayak races and the slower more relaxing fishing on Lake Mojave!

Accommodations:

Many Hotels to choose from on both sides of the river

If you want to attend the Bullhead City Regatta you should plan ahead whether with Hotel reservations or reservations at Davis Camp or even renting a boat at Katherine's Landing located 15 minutes away.

Directions:

I suggest you google map Laughlin Nevada and it's sister city across the river in Bullhead City AZ. An easy drive south from Las Vegas Nevada only 110 miles or about thirty miles from Kingman AZ

Resources:

I used the Bullheadcityregatta web site. Next year I want to bring the family so will plan ahead with Hotel reservations. My adult kids will enjoy the Regatta while my Grandsons and I enjoy fishing and swimming in nearby Lake Mojave.
