Trip Overview

Bighorn Canyon NRA is a great place to get away from the mainstream of vacationers that normally visit Yellowstone or the Tetons. I've paddled on the main lake body and also into the Bighorn River Canyon.

There are magnificent views of the mountains, tall canyon walls, and wildlife. It is also a good fishery for those so inclined. There are a few good campsites but paddling a good distance is required. Be prepared for windy conditions. I found this out after moving to Wyoming.

Accommodations:

There are motel rooms in Lovell, Powell, and Cody. There is plenty of camping in the nearby Big Horn Mountains. At this time there is no rental equipment nearby but that is subject to change before long.

Fees:

A BLM permit is required

Directions:

Take Hwy 14A from Lovell, WY approx 4 mi; turn on hwy 37 North; approx 5 miles to N.R.A.

Resources:
