Gave this a shot with a 17' canoe and one kayak. Was a fun adventure starting at the put-in right on Yaphank Ave. There is parking for at least a dozen cars and a boardwalk that goes to the water. Sign says to pay a $5 fee at Southhaven Cty Park to use the water and to do that first. We did not as we had no idea that was "required". There was no one around the entire day. Water depth was good and there was actually a swift current moving us south. A beautiful paddle, but the biggest problem are all the downed trees, overgrown brush and low hanging branches. A lot of ducking made it interesting, but also a little buggy. It needs a good clearing before the upper portion of the river is unusable. A little bit of noise from the LIE at times, but still fun and worth it. We only went 1.5 miles south, stopped at a small floating dock to eat lunch, then turned around north. There was one possible portage over a a small concrete drop. We made it fun and went right over it instead! Then of course had to walk it over coming back north. Still fun. I think this would be a great location to begin a southward journey along the Carmens with a take out spot at the rental place. You can park there for free with a license indicating you live in Brookhaven. So leave a a car at the south end and do this one all 3.5 miles south.
