The Grand Harbour, Malta

Mediterranean Sea

Description

A paddle around the Durand Harbour of Valletta is always special, particularly if you are interested in history. I have always launched in the large inlet to the north, Marsamxett Harbour. Paddle around the point where Fort St Elmo, is located, pass underneath the bridge and ahead is revealed the Grand Harbour. It has been described as Malta’s greatest geographic asset.

It was involved in the a Great Siege of Malta in 1565 as well as during the Second World War. Read the history beforehand or even better paddle the harbour in the company of local kayakers if possible.

Today it remains a busy commercial harbour so remember your buoyage and to paddle in a manner which is unlikely to compromise the workings of the commercial traffic.
