Description

Narrows Locks is part of the Rideau Canal National Historic Site that gives from Ottawa to Kingston. narrows Lock separates the Big Rideau (north side) from the Upper Rideau. The lock was completed in 1832. It has one of only four blockhouses on the system with staff quarters on top and public bathrooms on the bottom. The Upper Rideau is shaped like a “Y”. Keeping to the right heading west on the Upper Rideau takes you to the village of Westport. Keeping to the right will take you Newboro Lock which is only 1 of three hydraulic locks on the Rideau Canal. The lake has few islands and can become extremely rough. Best to paddle early morning or evening. The Big Rideau is very large lake - 19 miles long with very deep and wide open sections. Due to the size of this lake, it can become very rough. Winds on both lakes prevail from the west. Great fishing on both lakes.
