Lees Ave

Rideau River - Ottawa, CA

Description

This is a nice urban spot to put into the Rideau River. It's grown a little weedy, and there is a multi-user pathway you'll need to cross -- be mindful of speeding bikes!

I like this spot as I take my 10 foot Pelican kayak on the OTrain (light rail) to Lees Station, and walk the short distance to the river.

Once you launch, head upriver (west) for a nicer paddle. You can go all the way to Billings Bridge. There is a lot to see: frogs, birds, colourful flowers, tadpoles, trees, suppers and other paddlers. The shorelines have for the most part been preserved as public space, so at times you'll almost forget your in the city! The water is about 3 to 6 feet deep for the majority of this section: too shallow for speeding motorboats.

To return you can ride the slow current back to Lees.

Note: you can head downriver (north east), but as you approach the highway overpass the water becomes shallower and swifter. Depending on the water levels, you may not be able to continue any further.
